RWS Vision
Europe is a healthy continent where a functional network of wilderness areas is sustainably managed and wildlife thrives, ensuring the natural resources necessary to support a healthy life for present and future generations of Europeans. Romania plays a key role in this vision, safeguarding some of the continent’s last remaining large-scale wilderness landscapes. The concept of wilderness in nature conservation is relatively young, yet highly ambitious in the European context. Europe is a densely populated continent, where wildlife and refuge areas for fauna have not traditionally been considered a priority.
Mission
The mission of the Romanian Wilderness Society is to actively contribute to building momentum for public debate and the development of legislative frameworks that enable the application of the wilderness concept at large landscape scales dominated by natural processes. Within this approach, protected areas do not function in isolation, but are managed in an integrated manner, as part of a connected ecological network.
Romania is one of the few European countries where such an approach has a genuine chance of being implemented, through an advanced level of conservation and integrated management of wilderness areas supported by an existing network of protected natural areas. However, we are currently at a critical moment, where any delay in implementing large-scale, landscape-level management may accelerate irreversible processes leading to the loss of this exceptional natural heritage.
Objectives
SRS aims to contribute to the following objectives:
- Identification and mapping of wilderness areas.
- Implementation of integrated and participatory wilderness management approaches.
- Management and administration of wilderness areas.
- Support for wilderness research and applied conservation science.
- Promotion and societal adoption of the wilderness concept.
- Facilitation of sustainable local economic development in and around wilderness areas, based on responsible resource use and preservation of natural landscapes.
- Development of public policy proposals, as well as lobbying and advocacy activities supporting relevant legislative harmonization.
- Contribution to the implementation of native species reintroduction projects in natural ecosystems.
What we do
The Romanian Wilderness Society was established in 2016 with the purpose of contributing to the conservation, promotion, and recognition of wilderness areas in Romania as an integral part of societal development that respects the balance between environmental, social, and economic principles.
SRS is a non-governmental organization supported by a multidisciplinary team with relevant experience and expertise in biodiversity conservation, protected area management, species reintroduction, species inventory and monitoring, ecological education, project management, and communication.
